The British label Hyperion has been on my wanted list for a long time. They release mostly unknown works by relatively unknown performers in superior quality sound. I sometimes buy the digital downloads from their website. They have released a lengthy series of piano concertos of the romantic era. This is part 27 of that series (they are now at number 87!). It has recently been re-released on vinyl, seemingly outside of the series.
Even though their own website says they’re still independent, they have been bought by UMG in February 2023. Since then their recordings are slowly added to streaming catalogues. A good thing, because these recordings deserve more attention. This series in particular is a treasure hoard of interesting works and composers. Many recent discoveries were already featured by Hyperion since 1980.
This record is not one of those: Saint-Saëns is well known, and so are these concerts. Compared to other recordings of these works this one stands out for its unbelievable clarity and detail. Highly recommended.
