Die Bach Kantate – BWV 107 (Was willst du dich betrüben), BWV 101 (Nimm von uns, Herr, du treuer Gott)

There was moment that I thought those catholics had better music. I was raised as a protestant, so the grass was greener on the other side of the fence. Much later I found out Bach was not a catholic but a lutheran. That is also a protestant.

But while reading the liner notes on this record, I was confused. If Bach was a protestant, why was there so much emphasis on specific days of the liturgical year? As far as I knew the protestant church, that was a catholic thing, they got rid of that together with the many statues and saints.

It turns out lutheran is in that sense much more close to Catholicism, so it retained that calendar. I don’t know if they also kept the saints, but they kept Trinitatis. I was absolutely fascinated.
