A song from the Bruce Springsteen album of the same name. This is a very personal song, about marriage and its failings. There are three in the marriage: the singer, his wife and all the things they’re scared of. Bruce’s marriage had just failed, so most of the album has this meaning.
These are good lyrics I think, even though they belong to a dark period in Springsteen’s life. The story of marriage is told in the form of a ride in a fairground’s Tunnel of love. From a grubby guy selling the ticket, passed funny mirrors where the couple is confronted with themselves, to an end in fears and doubts.
Not a pleasant song, once you know this.
