Major Tom is a character created by David Bowie in 1969, in his song Space oddity. It concerns an astronaut looking from space at Earth. He is for some reason no longer able to return to Earth. Peter Schilling made this song in 1983 about the same character. It can be viewed as the German version of Bowie’s song.
Within the Neue Deutsche Welle, this is the best seller. Because of its enormous success in Europe, Schilling made a version translated into English: Major Tom (coming home). My record has only the German version, but it can be heard in the Spotify link.
The song is covered by many artists, most notably also by the actor William Shatner. Says wikipedia, but I cannot find it.
