Strauss – Don Quixote

Discogs

Don Quixote can be viewed as both a symphonic poems with two soloists, or as a double concerto for cello and viola. Programmatic music it is, with the cello playing the role of Don Quixote, and the viola portraying his trusted squire Sancho Panza. It was composed in 1897 and premiered a year later.

I bought the last couple of records all on the same day, and I was lucky. These are all good recordings of Rostropovich. The Russian cellist of great fame inspired many composers to write specifically for him, and really put the instrument to the center of attention.
