As early as 1971, Vangelis recorded a few tracks in collaboration with the French free jazz label BYG. The project was not finished and the recorded material was never released. BYG was taken over by Charly records, and they found the material in the vault. Without informing Vangelis, they decided to just publish it in 1978. When Vangelis found out, he sued the record company and won the case. It is a bit unclear what happened after that, but it seems unlikely that the remaining records were destroyed.
This record however, is not The dragon. It is an unofficial release of an unofficial release, with even more unofficial material by Vangelis. None of it is sanctioned by the man himself. For fans like me however, it is nice to hear these totally different recordings in full.
