Perfect music for a groggy Sunday morning. I know Florence + The Machine because somebody told me they are very gothic, and I was very much into that at the time. The recommendation wasn’t entirely correct though: this is indy, but not gothic. It might be the lyrics, but I almost never listen to lyrics. It stuck because it is just nice Summer music for me. It cheers me up.

This also was the conclusion of the review in Time magazine in 2011, when the album was elected second best of the year: Despite her penchant for emotive gloom, Welch’s tales of heartache can be oddly uplifting; when she sings about darkness and demons, we know she will ultimately conquer them. Gothic is about the joy of despair, not about overcoming it.
