Chants de l’Atlas

Marie-Louise-Taos Amrouche was an Algerian writer and singer. She fought for the emancipation of Berbers and was the first Algerian woman to publish a novel. She was born in 1913, and recorded this record as her second in 1970.

The Kabyle are a Berber ethnic group living in the Atlas Mountains, in the east of Algeria. Or rather, it is the name of their language, which is also the language that Amrouche sings here. Ger books were written in French, her records were in what I suppose was her native language.

I must say, as interesting as this might be, I didn’t like this record very much. It is personal, I just don’t like the sound of the language.
