The Castle of Kishmul sits on an island in Castle Bay next to the island of Barra on the Hebrides, to the East of mainland Scotland. It was built as the seat of the Chief of the clan MacNeil. The earliest written mention of the place is from 1549, but legend has it the stronghold goes back to the 11th century. Somewhere during that time, it was defended by a ship of Norse design.
The Chief of the clan started restoration works in 1937, but sold the castle in 2001 to Historic Scotland for the yearly sum of one pound plus a bottle of whisky. Since the outbreak of corona it has been closed to the public, at this moment for restoration works. It is unknown when it will open again.
