Rachmaninov – Etudes-tableaux

I wrote earlier about these in the version of Ashkenazy. Howard Shelley presents both series on one record, in an impeccable recording by Hyperion. Recordings of this superb label are always a treat. Clear of tone and sharp in timing, these recordings somehow keep well over the years. Where Ashkenazy’s already seems dated, this one feels like it is made this year.

British pianist Howard Shelley started his career in the early 70s and has a large amount of recordings on his name, mainly on Chandos and Hyperion. Especially Rachmaninov has his interest, and the Spotify link is part of his collection of complete solo works from the composer. I know him better from his recordings in the longstanding series of romantic piano concertos from Hyperion.
