A Gregorian requiem, a mass for the dead, as performed by the monastic choir of the Abbey of d’En Calcat in southern France. In fact, this abbey is situated in a region called Tarn. I’ve been in that region, and I really loved it there.
For years we used to go to a camping site in the Dordogne, right along the river of the same name. The place was somewhere between Bordeaux and the famous prehistoric caves of Lascaux. The Tarn is more to the south of there, and a bit more forested. Those forests really made me happy as a kid.
The surroundings of the abbey look just as I remembered the area. It’s remoteness inspired many men to join the community and join the liturgical hours. It was founded in 1890, but had to move out of France because of the anti-clerical laws of prime minister Pierre Waldeck-Rousseau in 1901. In 1918 they returned and have been successful ever since. They produce psalteries, an early form of the zither.
