Gerard van Maasakkers is a singer from the south Netherlands region of Brabant, singing in the dialect of that region. This is his first album, from 1978, but he is still singing and published his latest album in 2022. These are funny little songs, but not really my taste. For me they’re more like a curiosity.
In another life I was with a girl from Brabant. She made me aware that many people from those regions have a beef with the western provinces. You see, the Netherlands is founded as a federation of several independent regions, that each gave up their independence to form what later became a nation state. Soon after, the three western provinces took an economical and cultural lead in that state. That is something that is not accepted everywhere that easily. For many people in those western provinces music like this just sounds a bit quaint, and it cannot really be taken seriously. I think it actually deserves a bit more attention.
