Shostakovich – Cello concerto no.2 / Glazunov – Chant du Ménestrel

Discogs

Shostakovich’s second cello concerto was composed in 1966, when the composer resided in the Crimea. The second part has a little street song from Odessa worked in the score.

In typical Shostakovich style, the sweet street song from Odessa is perverted in the shape of a fanfare. The grotesque music is accompanied by the sound of whip during its climactic end.

It was written for Rostropovich, who is also playing it on this recording. A brilliant sounding recording, and worth listening to. If you can find it.
