Janse Bagge Bend makes music in the Limburg dialect. They’re first performance was during the carnaval celebrated in the region. They were playing a song about the local fast food joints and the Chinese restaurant. Back in 1979 they were a so called dweilorkest.

Dweilorkesten are ensembles made up of wind- and percussion instruments. The name comes from a word (dweilen) for aimlessly (and mostly drunk) walking around. After the carnaval festivities, one needs to walk home. The more one had to drink, the slower the walk. Maybe all these drunk people could use some music while they were walking like that?

So the story I always heard about this is that these were ensembles that played during the breaks of speed skating contests. During those breaks, the ice needed to be cleaned, so that the next contestants had the same chances of winning, on fresh ice. That process also happens to be called dweilen.

I know the bend mostly for the one song: Sollicitere. It is also their biggest hit. I was surprised to hear many other nice songs, this is better than I was expecting.
