A short opera buffa (a comical opera) of around 40 minutes, telling the story of a clever woman catching an old man to marry. She is working for him, but is at the same time managing him. He grows tired of that, and cries out find me a woman to marry, so I can get rid of this nagging woman! With a clever ruse the servant lady manages to convince the old man to marry her instead. In doing so, he has to admit he loved her all along.
La serva padrona (the maid turned mistress) was written in 1733 as an intermezzo, between two acts of a bigger opera for the benefit of the audience that was still in their seats during the break. The opera seria it was intermezzoing was called Il prigionier superbo. It was not successful, and rediscovered as late as 1997.
A well recorded and interesting work. However, no version online. Spotify has some recordings, and for all lovers of opera during the period between baroque and classical periods, a must-hear.
