Schubert – Klavierquintett, Op.114 “Die Forelle”

Discogs

I’ve written a couple of times about this piece, maybe the best known work of chamber music ever created. In one of those articles I said it was in the box, but not in Spotify. Looking at that a bit closer, I see why: the Spotify link only shows music of the Beaux Arts on the Philips label up to 1974. This recording was made in 1976.

I still couldn’t find it however. I doesn’t popup on the list of recordings by the Beaux Arts. So I used a little trick: try the lesser known name, look for the artist and browse. And voila! Thank you Samuel Rhodes. Rhodes is the viola player that needed to be added to the Trio. During that time he was part of the Juilliard String Quartet, for which he toured the world for 44 years. Viola players often find themselves the butt of the joke, but they are important for the cohesion of the group. Most players can handle these jokes very well, by the way.

What’s the difference between a violin and a viola?

  1. The viola burns longer.
  2. The viola holds more beer.
  3. You can tune the violin.
