Russian pianist Vladimir Sofronitzki is of an older generation. His world was limited to the Sovjet Union, and when Stalin asked him to play at the Potsdam Conference in 1945, it was only the second tour he did outside of his homeland. As a result, he’s not that widely known in the West, but when he claimed that Richter was a genius, Richter answered that Sofronitzki was a god.
God started his first concert in 1919, and had the peak of his career near the end of the war. He married the eldest daughter of composer Alexander Scriabin, and is considered a specialist in interpreting his music, even though he never met the man. Sofronitzki died in 1961.
