Miles Davis Quartet

This ten inch was for sale during the US Black Friday Record Store Day event of 2011. I found it some months later in the record store near me. It originally came out in 1954. The first four songs were recorded in 1953, the last three a year later. In the meantime Miles Davis kicked his heroin addiction. Prestige records would release the album in 1956 as a 12 inch with an extra song added, and some different versions of songs.

This is an early example of so called hard bop, a form of jazz from New York and Chicago, with influences from rhythm and blues and gospel. It boasts some funky rhythms and is related to funky jazz that way. Miles Davis was early with this, and you can follow the history of this form of jazz by looking at the names of the musicians he worked with. Here it is Percy Heath on bass, Art Blakey and Max roach on drums, Charles Mingus, Horace Silver and John Lewis on piano.
