Schoenberg – Verklaerte Nacht / Berg – Lyrische Suite

Discogs

This is the third recording I have of Schönberg’s Verklärte Nacht (see also here and here). I’m still waiting for the trio version, but this is the second orchestral version I have. I think I like the other one a little better, but it is close. An interesting comparison.

Alban Berg’s Lyrical Suite is the lesser known piece here for me. It was written in 1925-1926 as a string quartet dedicated to Zemlinsky, more specifically his Lyrical Symphony. Berg arranged it in 1928 for orchestra, and that is the version on this record. The main motif of the suite is spelling (in the German notation) ABHF, and is a musical version of the little hearts young lovers carve in trees: Alban Berg – Hanna Fuchs-Robettin. Berg had an affair with her some years before writing the suite.
