This is the suite form of Bizets incidental music for a play about a girl from Arles. The incidental music is hard to find, but these suites are very well known. The pieces are full of melodies, woven like a tapestry, in layers over each other. In typical French fashion lots of orchestral colouring is added for your listening pleasure.
This is a Russian recording of a fine quality. If you like orchestral works, this is certainly something to try. Parts of it make it to the top of the classical charts, so they should most certainly be recognised.
