French organist Marie-Claire Alain lived and breathed the giant instrument. Her two brothers composed for it, her father built them. She played them on 260 recordings, mostly of Bach. On this recording she plays the organ of the St Laurence Church in Rotterdam.

There are organ aficionados that hunt their favourite instruments all over the world. Each instrument has its own flavour, sound and possibilities. Since the instruments are so huge, they cannot move, these people travel over the world to listen to them, and collect the recordings. I find that fascinating, but don’t share the enthusiasm.

I used to have more of these, but I put them all in the attic. No more organ for me, please.
