Ten famous piano works based on paintings by Mussorgsky’s friend Viktor Hartmann. Hartmann died in 1873, and when Mussorgsky visited the commemorative exhibition to which he himself lent two pictures, he was inspired to create a ten part suite about it.
Ten paintings find a place, woven together by a piece called promenade. So while listening, you can find yourself walking along the exhibits. Though they’re all famous, maybe the best known is the Gates of Kiev.
