Early jazz today. Sidney Bechet was born in 1897 in New Orleans in a musical family. At the age of six he already started in his brother’s band, and he never stopped. Mostly on clarinet, but he taught himself all kinds of instruments that were lying around in the house.
in 1919 he went to London traveling with Will Marion Cook and his orchestra. He learnt the soprano saxophone, from then on his instrument of choice. The oldest recordings are from 1923. Most of what I can find now was published after he died in 1959. This record is from 1971, and part of a series about jazz history.
