Never mind the bollocks here’s the Sex Pistols

The debut, and only studio album of the Sex Pistols was the result of many internal and external conflict. As the quintessential punk band of all times, the Sex Pistols established a name for themselves by the title of the record alone: bollocks is English for testicles, but is also a slang term for bull sh*t. In that sense the title means: Stop talking nonsense, here are the Sex Pistols!

The result was that the record got banned from radio stations, record stores didn’t want to sell it for fear of injunctions by the police (which they actually did!) and it even endangered the existence of the record in the first place. The band was passed around the record companies like a hot potato, because nobody wanted to burn their fingers on a band that had so much obscenity as their marketing campaign. When finally Virgin Records was left as the only option, (replacement…) bass player Sid Vicious managed to almost got them into trouble again by harassing Queen in the neighbouring studio facility.

However, the record sold like crazy, probably more because of the sheer attitude of the band members than their musical talent. I’m not saying its a bad record, but it is not known for its musical subtlety or fast guitar picking. It is that attitude that made it the most influential punk album of all time.
