The Ghent born Dirk van Esbroeck met the Argentinian guitar player Juan Masondo in the early 70s. The two were both part of the successful folk band Rum, founded in 1969. Dirk grew up in Argentina, because his parents fled the accusations of collaboration during the war years just after the war in 1948. In my (I hope carefully worded) opinion, it is interesting to see that Van Esbroeck’s parents went to the country that harboured most of the Nazi refugees after the war. Doesn’t it confirm the views of the community of them? At the very least it is a bit suspicious. Dirk and his parents did come back, and Dirk joined a rich musical folk community.
About the music, I can say that after seeing the cover of this record, with the two guys sitting like they don’t belong, I didn’t expect much from it. It is better than that, and certainly worth a listen.
