Ella sings Gershwin vol. II

Discogs

Don’t let the silly cover of this record fool you: part two of the Ella sings Gershwin is a serious affair. All sweet love songs, but the jazzy voice of the Queen of Jazz is impeccable. Fitzgerald completed three albums with Ira and George Gershwin’s jazz tunes, and since I cannot find this particular collection on the wiki page I’m assuming this is a later collection. No release date is given, and the originals are from 1950, 1959 and 1983.

From early in life, Ella Fitzgerald was a success. During her 60 years’ career, she sang in many orchestras, collaborations and in many styles. There is a statement on her wiki page claiming that the jazz label Verve was created around her: certainly a large part of what is now considered classic Ella is found there.

Much to my surprise, after two records I’m still not tired of her voice. I was expecting this to happen, because I’ve had that issue with her more classic collaboration with Louis Armstrong: Ella and Louis. This one is better, in my view.
