Revolver

Discogs

The 7th studio album of The Beatles, released in 1966. It was supposed to be called Abracadabra, but the name was already used. Recording it came with the assumption that it would never be performed live. The Fab Four had just decided to say farewell to the world of hysteria, and retreat to the acid soaked vibe of the studio.

They wanted to use a more modern studio, like STAX in Memphis, but again they were chased away because of their own popularity. They settled on the old EMI studio complex at Abbey Road where they worked before. Inspired by the musique concrète and Karlheinz Stockhausen, they discovered magnetic tape and its many musical uses.

220 hours of studio work (not including the mixing itself) resulted in what many see as the greatest stride forwards in pop music. In many ways Revolver is revolutionary, and it is contesting the top spot of The Beatles albums with Sgt Pepper. I however found it a bit of a disappointment. Too poppy maybe, or too much Indian experimentation.
