Spohr – Double Quartets e minor op 87 / g minor op 136

Discogs

German composer Louis Spohr doesn’t belong to the great names of the romantic era, even though he was active during that time. He was befriended with Beethoven, played with him, but was not impressed by him: his piano was out of tune and his playing harsh and careless, he wrote. He was also active in the same time as the great Paganini, vying for the title of greatest violinist. Incidentally: Spohr is also the inventor of the chinrest, a convenience that many violinist thank him for.

Spohr wrote a total of four double quartets, ensemble music for two string quartets. These are numbers 3 and 4. I find it hard to judge the performance without comparison, but I do love these recordings. I think I’ve mentioned that earlier, but English recordings made in the 80s are at the height of what can be done.
