Grieg – Lyrische Stücke

Discogs

Grieg’s lyric pieces are short sketches for solo piano, composed in 10 sets of around 6 pieces each, between 1867 and 1901. He must have been conscious of it being a complete work, because he ends with the same theme as he used in the first piece.

In his recording from 1981, Kocsis plays two sets, so this is not a complete recording. Again, a clear technically very good performance, and for me that is what makes this Grieg acceptable. In many recordings I admit I find Grieg’s work coming across as a bit of salon nostalgia. Nationalistic Nordic romance about Trolls and forests. This version goes past that.
