A festival of English music

Discogs

England has been enriched through the ages with beautiful music. The traditional view is that much of the inspiration for that has come from the continent, mainly Germany. With Händel and Mendelssohn as leading figures through the ages. Just like it happened in America with the culture seeking colonists looking desperately for elevation through beauty.

In a time where many dominant ideas about the past are discovered to be faulty, or biased at least, I am sometimes wondering if this Germanic central vision is a reality. There must have been influence from indigenous people, musical cultures that were already there, or were well established in the romantic era. Where else comes the distinctive flavor that English music has from?

This impressive record can be seen in that light, but it is not a testimony to the distinctive traits of English music. At most it makes me enjoy the late romantic fruits of that.
