Ligeti – 2. Streichquartett, etc

Like so many people, I’m thinking my musical taste is very diverse. Whenever I hear someone claim that about themselves, I’m inclined to look for extremes, and usually they had no idea it even existed. When I’m saying this about myself, I’m comparing to other people. And then, when I’m looking at my own collection, it is mainly classical, with the odd ill-chosen title in between. Is my taste really that diverse?

There are whole sections of music I’m not even aware of. The nooks and crannies of urban music are totally unknown to me. Acid jazz? What are you talking about? IDM, pff… give me a break. And then I’m not even starting about all music outside of the standard western spectrum. There is so much.

The title I’m writing about today is one of those. Side A is the second string quartet of Ligeti, in a version that I already know and have written about. The rest of side A and the whole of side B I barely could stand. A slow, motet-like choral piece, followed by experiments on organ. Maybe I have to listen to it more, to understand it. That’s not my ambition, nor is it what I wanted to write here. There are so many kinds of music on the world, it is impossible to keep track. We have to choose what we like, and cut out everything we don’t.
