The Goombay Dance Band was founded in 1979 by Olivier Bendt. Bendt was an actor and musical star that got some fame playing in the musical Hair. The band had worldwide success at the start of the 80s, but failed when they tried it again. I have another 12inch of the biggest hit in their home country, Sun of Jamaica. This one is a close second.
The band is named after a bay in Saint Lucia, the Caribbean island where Bendt’s wife was born. Since the style is a Caribbean mix of calypso and euro-pop, it fits a German band with a singer that has a fascination for the tropics.
