Dvořák – Dumky-trio / Ravel – Trio a-moll

Discogs

The recording of the dumky presented here is exactly the same as the one I wrote about earlier. It is a bit surprising that I bought it again, given my impressions of the first. I was still looking for a good recording I suppose, and didn’t realise I bought the same. The other side is the Ravel trio which is a very beautiful work, but this time the performance is not that good. There is always something!

Ravel’s piano trio was written in 1914, during the outbreak of the First World War. After working on it Ravel volunteered to help in the war. Nothing like that can be heard in the work. Musically it is very colourful, with influences from the country of Ravel’s mother, Basque. Oddly some Malaysian dances can be found in there too.
