That’s jazz

Discogs

Although it looks a bit cheap, this record contains quite a lot of early jazz classics. I think I would take it more seriously if the title would refer to that. This is not an overview of modern jazz, this is the kind of jazz that was played on the riverboats on the Mississippi in the 30s and 40s. It could be the film score of the movie The legend of 1900, a movie that featured a lot of jazz, and an amazing scene with Clarence Williams III as Jelly Roll Morton (also on this record).

It is a pity that with the coming of the streaming audio, this kind of compilations fell on the wayside. There seems to be no reason to have them. After all, you can create these yourself, right? But this collection is curated, at least it is supposed to. Sometimes the choices are more commercially motivated (copyright costs, etc). In this case I think they are genuine, since there are little copyright costs involved in these golden oldies.
