La Chifonnie were a band in the 70s. They came from the South-Eastern region of La DrĂ´me in France. They were playing chants de marins: sea shanty’s. Songs as they were sung by labourers on merchant vessels. Most of these songs were like a call and response, with the leader singing a witty line, and the crowd responding. They were used to make the work easier.
The songs on this record feature a big role for the accordeon. It makes them different from what I’m used to. Also very French.
