I’ve written about the Swiss born American composer Ernest Bloch before. Then it was for a recording of Jewish themes. This time the theme is more tropical, but no less mysterious and intimate. This is his first piano quintet, composed in 1923. This is around the same time as the work I wrote about last time: From Jewish life is from 1924.
The wiki page about Bloch mentions this piece evokes images of Gauguin. Gauguin was a painter in the naive style, painting what looks like simple figures of exotic women on tropical beaches. I have not heard those in this music though.
