I think this is the only record I have left of works by Telemann. He wrote mostly for woodwind instruments, and that is really not my thing. I struggled to get through this, I must admit. However, it has Frans Brüggen, who later went on to become a bigshot conductor. He died in 2014.
Frans Brüggen founded the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century (Orkest van de Achttiende Eeuw) in 1981. They have quite a good name in their field.
Funnily enough, the last pice of this album was conducted by André Rieu. Rieu is a Dutch violinist and conductor, best known for his popularised massive concerts with (semi) classical music. In my view he makes classical music for people that know nothing of it. You might say he makes it accessible, but I don’t agree with that statement. I think he lowers the level of classical music so much that it is more of a dog and pony show.
